What cookies are

Cookies are small text files stored in your browser when you visit a website. They allow the site, or a third-party service that the site uses, to recognize your browser between requests and across visits. Modern advertising and analytics also rely on similar technologies including local storage and pixel tags. This policy uses "cookies" as shorthand for all of those.

Categories of cookies in use

Strictly necessary

Cookies that are required for basic operation — for example, security and load balancing — set by hosting infrastructure. These do not track you across sites.

Analytics — Google Analytics (GA4)

Google Analytics sets cookies (commonly named _ga, _ga_*, and similar) to count page views, session counts, and similar aggregate measurements. The data tells us which pages are read and how visitors navigate the site. It is not used to identify you personally.

To opt out across all sites, install the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

Advertising — Google AdSense and partners

The site displays ads through Google AdSense. AdSense and Google's advertising partners use cookies and similar identifiers to:

  • Serve ads relevant to your interests based on your prior browsing
  • Limit how often you see the same ad ("frequency capping")
  • Measure ad performance
  • Detect and prevent fraud

To control or opt out of personalized advertising:

Google's advertising practices are described at policies.google.com/technologies/ads.

Managing cookies through your browser

Browsers allow you to view, delete, and block cookies. The location of these settings varies by browser:

Blocking all cookies may affect how some websites function, but Government.biz remains accessible without cookies — only analytics and ad-personalization features are impacted.

Do Not Track

Some browsers offer a "Do Not Track" (DNT) signal. There is no industry-wide standard for how sites should respond to DNT, and this site does not currently change its behavior based on the DNT signal. Instead, use the opt-out tools listed above to control analytics and advertising data collection.

Consent in regions that require it

In jurisdictions that require explicit consent for non-essential cookies (such as the European Economic Area, UK, and Switzerland under the GDPR/ePrivacy framework), the site relies on a consent mechanism where applicable. You can withdraw consent at any time using your browser settings or the third-party opt-out tools above.

Updates to this policy

This policy may be updated when the cookies in use change. The "Last reviewed" date at the top of the page reflects the most recent review. The privacy policy covers the broader topic of data handling.
